MATTED COAT REMOVAL AGREEMENT

At Takoda Dog Grooming, your dog’s health and wellbeing is our number one priority. Due to an assessment of your dog’s coat, Takoda Dog Grooming has found your dog’s coat to be matted which will result in the coat needing to be shaved off on the shortest length necessary to remove the matting. Matted hair will cause your dog a lot of pain as it pulls against the skin as he/she moves around. Shaving off the coat is the only humane option as dematting using dematting tools or trying to brush and comb the knots out can cause an extreme amount of unnecessary stress, pain and discomfort to your dog which, as stated under section 4 of the Animal Welfare Act 2006, must not be caused.  As stated in Takoda Dog Grooming’s terms and conditions, Takoda Dog Grooming reserves the right to shave your dog to the necessary length required to remove all matting from your dog’s coat. Shaving the coat can dramatically change your dog’s appearance as the hair will be very short and close to the skin. This may result in uncovering the following medical conditions that have become hidden from neglect of coat maintenance inbetween grooming appointments:

  • Skin conditions including hot spots, sores, and bacterial/fungal infections. Hair loss and skin bruises can also occur from very tight matting.

  • Ear hematomas-bleeding of the ears from excessive head shaking after shaving off matted hair, this is caused by blood rushing back to the surface after the circulation was cut off for a length of time from matting.

  • Parasites e.g ticks, fleas and maggots

  • Clipper rash, nicks and grazes

All necessary care and precautions will be taken however it is not uncommon during shaving off matted coats for any of the above conditions to occur. Your dog may also act differently once the matting is removed as they will be adjusting to feeling the air on their skin and newfound freedom of movement. Takoda Dog Grooming reserves the right to ask you to bring your dog back another day for completion if your dog finds the procedure too distressing or exhausting. Takoda Dog Grooming will be happy to book a coat maintenance session with you in the future for £10, lasting 30 minutes-1 hour which will include the correct tools and techniques needed for correct coat maintenance inbetween grooming appointments. If your dog is prone to matting or if you struggle to maintain your dog’s coat inbetween appointments, it is highly advisable to book a regular schedule of grooming appointments once every 4-6 weeks to help keep on top of the matting and to have your dog cut to a more manageable length.
